pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas.
 
parainfluenza virus: Describes several single-strand RNA viral diseases that cause respiratory disease. Parainfluenza usually affects children.
 
patent ductus arteriosus: A condition in which the ductus arteriosus (a connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta in a fetus) does not close after birth. Surgery is needed so that the child can properly oxygenate his blood with his lungs.
 
pediatrician: A doctor who specializes in childhood disease.
 
pediculosis: A lice infestation.
 
pertussis: The medical term for whooping cough.
 
pervasive developmental disorder: A developmental disorder similar to autism, with an onset age between three and twelve years of age.
 
pharyngitis: Inflammation of the pharynx (the upper portion of the throat).
 
pink eye: An infection of the eye membranes that is also referred to as conjunctivitis.
 
polio: A crippling viral disease that causes skeletal and muscle deterioration, nerve cell inflammation and paralysis. Polio is now rare in developed countries due to vaccination programs.
 
pulmonary fibrosis: Scar tissue in the lungs.
 
pulmonary stenosis: A narrowing of the connection between the heart's right ventricle and the pulmonary artery, adversely affecting blood flow.
 
respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): A viral strain capable of causing brochiolitis and bronchopneumonia is children.
 
Reye’s syndrome: A life threatening condition that causes fever, liver damage and swelling in the brain and kidneys. Aspirin may trigger Reye's syndrome in children.
 
rubella: A milder disease similar to measles. Also known as German measles, rubella can harm a fetus if the mother contracts rubella in the early stages of pregnancy.
 
scarlet fever: A bacteria infection that causes nose, mouth and throat inflammation, as well as red
rashes and toxemia (toxic compounds in the blood).
 
scoliosis: An abnormal spinal curve.
 
strep throat: A sore throat accompanied by fever and inflammation. Step throat is caused by hemolytic streptococci bacteria.
 
stidor: A harsh, squeaking sound made while breathing heard when the air passages are obstructed.
 
surfactant: A protein that coats the lungs and prevents lung collapse. Premature babies often lack sufficient levels of surfactant.
